Simon Beauregard is infected with leprosy. He abandons Arkadia and travels, with his wife and Tom and Sarah Icklethorn to Terra Incognita where he meets the strange healer Lazarus. Lazarus heals him all right, but the establishment is near to an Indian encampment which is threatened by an advancing army of Orcs. The Indians travel on great birds and the recovered Simon flies with the Indian chief to the Huns and then to the Emperor of China seeking their help. The Huns arrive at the encampment followed by the Chinese army. Together these two armies, together with the Indians, defeat the Orcs and then the Huns sign a treaty of amity with the settled Chinese. Lazarus baptises Simon and Elfwyn Beauregard.
